The Checkers have one last home series slated before the holiday break, hosting the powerhouse Providence Bruins for a two-game set.

QUICK HITS

ON THE SKIDS

The Checkers are mired in a five-game losing streak, their longest of the season and the longest active such streak in the AHL. This marks the first time that they have lost five straight games in regulation since the 2016-17 season.

AGAINST THE BRUINS

The Checkers and Bruins got very familiar early on this season, playing each other three times over the span of two weeks - all of which came in Providence. The Bruins had the upperhand in that first string of games, beating the Checkers in all three contests.

Last season the Checkers went 3-0-0-0 at home against the Bruins, with each of those games being decided in a shootout.

SEARCHING FOR GOALS

The Checkers have scored six goals over their last five games and have scored two or fewer goals in eight of their last 10 contests.

They’ll aim to turn things around against a stingy Providence club that ranks as one of the top defensive teams in the AHL, though the Bruins have allowed five goals in two of their last three games.

KILLING IT

The penalty kill has been a bright spot as of late for the Checkers, who have killed all eight of their times shorthanded over the last two contests.

QUOTES

Checkers Head Coach Geordie Kinnear on this week's practices
"The focus is on getting better - whether it’s a workout or practice or individual skills. My message has been that hard work always pays off, so keep working hard."

Kinnear on the newest Checkers, Givani Smith
"He’s been in the league, he’s a big, physical presence. He does everything the right way, creates space. We’re excited to see him."

Kinnear on the Charlotte blue line
"We’re still looking for chemistry between the D pairs, I think there are still a lot of levels to get to from the back-end perspective. We have to do a better job back there, helping with the offense, breaking pucks out a lot cleaner. That will allow us to score more goals and be better defensively."

Kinnear on the departure of Michael Del Zotto
"At some points we had 10 D, which is not ideal to be quite honest. This is an opportunity for guys to grow and get more quality time on ice."
