Charlotte’s busy road trip rolls on as the Checkers kick off a three-in-three weekend.

THREE STORYLINES

POWERING UP

The Checkers’ power play has ramped its production back up as of late. After a three-game drought – tied for their longest of the season – they have recorded a power-play goal in five consecutive games, going 6-for-23 over that stretch. They’ll look to keep that hot streak going against a Phantoms squad that ranks in the middle of the pack when it comes to the penalty kill.

SHORTHANDED STRUGGLES

On the other side, the Checkers gave up another shorthanded goal in their last outing, bringing their season total to 14 – tied for the highest mark in the AHL. The Phantoms have scored seven shorthanded goals this season, tied for 13th in the league.

CONDON COMES ABOARD

The Checkers saw their goaltending situation bolstered this week when Tampa Bay assigned veteran netminder Mike Condon to Charlotte. The 29-year-old has seen significant success in the NHL, but injuries have held him to just 13 games total between the NHL, AHL and ECHL since the start of the 2018-19 season. Joining Charlotte gives Condon a chance to get back to his game, while giving the Checkers an experienced piece alongside Callum Booth as both Alex Nedeljkovic and Anton Forsberg remain in the NHL with Carolina. Should he see action this weekend, he’d face a Lehigh Valley team that recently hung eight goals on Bridgeport but has just three total goals over the last two games and ranks third from the bottom in the AHL’s offensive rankings.
