The Checkers look to keep their winning ways going as they visit the Binghamton Devils for the first time this season. Here are five things to know before tonight’s puck drop.

1. HOT START

The Checkers continue to roll along with their best start in franchise history, boasting the best points percentage in the AHL. Charlotte is one of just two teams to reach six wins this season and trail Milwaukee for the most points in the league, though the Admirals have played one more game.

The Checkers have never won more than six games during the month of October, hitting that mark four times in eight AHL seasons. The year’s team is guaranteed to finish the month with a record over .500 for the second consecutive season and the third time in the last four years. Their best opening month in terms of points percentage came in 2012-13 when the Checkers roared out to a 6-2-1 record in October.

2. ROAD WARRIORS

The Checkers continue to thrive on the road this season, logging a perfect 5-0-0 record away from home. In fact, Charlotte is one of just four Eastern Conference teams that have yet to lose a road game in regulation.

The Checkers’ are tied for the most road wins in the AHL and dating back to last season have earned a point in each of their last 13 road contests.

3. SHUT IT DOWN

The Checkers have established themselves as the stingiest defense in the AHL thus far this season, surrendering just 2.00 goals-per-game on average, the best mark in the league. They have been especially frustrating for opposing offenses late in games, allowing just four goals in the third period this season, and have allowed two or fewer goals in five of their seven games thus far.

4. SCOUTING THE DEVILS

After falling short of the postseason last year, the Devils find themselves at an even .500 through eight games this season. They have struggled to score this season, producing the third-worst goals-per-game average in the league and totaling nine goals in their last six games. The offense still has weapons though, with rookie Brett Senley and third-year pro Nick Lappin leading the way.

Binghamton has fared slightly better on the defensive side of the puck, tying for 19th in goals-allowed per game and holding Belleville to just one goals on Wednesday. NHL netminder Corey Schneider has been between the pipes for each of the last two games for the Devils as he works his way back from injury, going 1-1-0 while surrendering four goals total.
