HURRICANES REASSIGN BOYCHUK

Immediately following both team’s overtime losses on Saturday, the Hurricanes reassigned Zach Boychuk to Charlotte.

Boychuk played three games during his second NHL stint of the season, recording no points. In Saturday’s 4-3 overtime loss to Tampa Bay, he started on a line with Eric Staal but ended up logging just 7:38 of ice time.

Upon his return to the Checkers, he instantly becomes the team’s active goal-scoring leader with 14 on the season. Should he make it to Cleveland in time for Charlotte’s 3 p.m. Sunday matinee against Lake Erie, that offense would come as a welcome boost as the Checkers look to avenge Saturday’s 3-2 shootout loss that saw the Monsters limit them to just 22 shots on goal.

Providing all Charlotte forwards made it through Saturday’s game without injury, Boychuk’s return would push one out of the lineup as a healthy scratch. The Checkers did not take an extra player with them for the back-to-back set against Lake Erie, with Riley Nash, Justin Krueger, Chris Murray and Rasmus Rissanen all staying in Charlotte due to injury.

Jerome Samson, who has scored more goals in a Checkers uniform than any other player this season (18), stays in Carolina after serving as a healthy scratch on Saturday. The return of Chad LaRose from injury had given the NHL club one extra forward.
