Chris Terry’s All-Star debut was a successful one.
The Checkers forward scored 3 points (2g, 1a) to lead the Western Conference to an 8-7 shootout victory in Atlantic City on Monday. Terry provided the spark for two separate rallies by his team, as the first score early in the first period made it 2-1, while his next tally in the second period stopped a four-goal run by the East to make it 6-3 (view box score).

Terry, now in his third professional season, would also provide an assist on Kevin Connauton’s goal to tie the game with 4:07 left in the third period. Despite being tied for the AHL lead with two game-winning goals in the shootout, he was not among the four skaters to shoot for the West as they prevailed 2-0 in the extra session. West goalie Ben Bishop (Peoria) stopped 10 of 11 shots in the third period and all four shootout attempts to earn the game’s MVP honors.
Update: Official scoring changes removed Terry's assist on the West's seventh goal but credited him an additional assist on goal No. 4. His total of 2 goals and 1 assist remains unchanged.
Terry’s 3 points were the most of any Western Conference skater and tied him with the East’s Jonathan Audy-Marchessault (Connecticut) and Cory Conacher (Norfolk) for the most of any player in the game. Conacher was the only other player to record two goals.
The night continued a recent scoring run for Terry, who recently tied his own team record by recording a point for the eighth consecutive game. He has 15 points during that run (4g, 11a), which has seen him take over the Checkers’ scoring lead with 40 points (10g, 30a) in 44 games. The 30 assists tie his career high set in each of the last two seasons, while his scoring pace has him on track to narrowly eclipse last season’s career high of 64 points.
On Sunday, Terry participated in the puck control and breakaway relays during the skills competition portion of the event. His three-man team fell to the East in the puck control relay, while he did not score against Manchester’s Jeff Zatkoff during the breakaway relay. The West prevailed 18-10 in the event, making it a clean sweep for the Checkers’ home conference.
Terry now returns to Charlotte to prepare for the Checkers’ two-game road trip through Oklahoma City and Texas that features games on Friday and Saturday. The team resumes practice on Wednesday before departing Thursday. |
