CHECKERS RECALL RYAN DONALD

With defenseman Chris Murray unable to make the trip to Abbotsford due to an injury suffered during Tuesday’s game, the Checkers have recalled Ryan Donald from the ECHL’s Florida Everblades.

Donald, 25, started the season with the Checkers but sat out the first six games as a healthy scratch up until his reassignment on Oct. 23. In 32 games with Florida this season, Donald has 11 points (3g, 8a) to go along with a plus-9 rating and 82 penalty minutes, both of which rank as team highs. Donald, a second-year pro who played four years at Yale University, has played a total of 16 AHL games with Springfield and Providence, recording 3 assists and 33 penalty minutes.

The addition of Donald, who is expected to make his Checkers debut on Friday and play again on Saturday, gives Charlotte six players on the roster who played their first game of the season in the ECHL. Two of those, Murray and forward Justin Shugg, are currently injured, while Matt Beca, Sean Dolan and John Muse are expected to dress on Friday.

Following Tuesday’s win over Grand Rapids, Charlotte coach Jeff Daniels did not have an immediate update on Murray’s condition. The defenseman, himself recalled from Florida on Jan. 12 to replace the injured Mathieu Roy, left the game at the end of the second period and did not return. Roy is expected to remain sidelined until February at the earliest.

Donald, who the Checkers signed to a two-way contract on Aug. 8, will be playing his first AHL game since suiting up for Providence on April 1 of last season.
