Standings: 2nd – South Division, 4th – American Conference
The Checkers are hot of late having picked up seven consecutive victories for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Charlotte currently sits five points back of first place South Carolina with three games in hand and will look to gain ground when they face off against the Florida Everblades for two games Tuesday and Thursday.
Ryan Munce continues his solid play and has won six straight starts. Munce is undefeated in regulation in his last eight starts and ranks third in the ECHL with 22 wins. Rookie forward Brock Bradford was assigned to the team today by the Lake Erie Monsters and will look to make an impact tomorrow. Bradford led Boston College in scoring last year with 25 goals.
Mar. 17 @ Elmira (W 2-1, SO)
The Checkers killed a four-minute penalty in overtime then made good with their ninth player in the shootout as they edged Elmira, 2-1, on Wednesday evening in Upstate New York. With the win, the Checkers sweep the season series with Elmira (3-0-0). Special teams were a factor as Charlotte did not allow a power play goal against an offense that includes three of the top six scorers in the ECHL. David Urquhart scored the lone goal in regulation while Kevin Schaeffer potted the shootout winner.
Mar. 18 @ Reading (W 4-3, SO)
Charlotte battled back from a two-goal deficit with three unanswered goals and downed Reading, 4-3, in a shootout for its third straight road win. Daniel Tkaczuk potted two goals while rookie goaltender Garrett Zemlak stopped 32 of 35 shots for the win in his first ever professional game. Andrew Carroll netted his league-leading fifth shootout-winning goal and Matt Schepke chipped in with two assists.
Mar. 19 vs. Trenton (W 4-3)
The Checkers scored a late power-play goal and held on for the win as they downed the Trenton Devils, 4-3, on Friday evening. With the win, their seventh in a row, the Checkers clinched a playoff berth with seven games to play in the regular season.
