Facing yet another injury, Charlotte has signed forward David Marshall to a professional tryout contract.
Marshall, 27, joins the Checkers from the ECHL’s Reading Royals, where he has posted a professional-career-high 50 points (18g, 32a) and 93 penalty minutes in 55 games this season. He ranks second on the team in goals, assists, points and penalty minutes while posting a plus-20 rating.

Since turning pro following a four-year career at Quinnipiac University, the undrafted right wing has played 115 total AHL games over the last five seasons with Lake Erie, Rochester, Worcester, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, San Antonio and Binghamton, including a scoreless six-game stint with Binghamton earlier this season. He has scored 26 points (14g, 12a) during that time.
Marshall (5-foot-11, 185 pounds), only joined the team around two hours before tonight's 7:15 p.m. start in Norfolk due to weather-related travel issues. He is expected to enter the lineup immediately, as Justin Shugg suffered a lower-body injury on Monday.
Marshall becomes seventh forward and 10th player on the team’s current roster that began the season at the ECHL level, with Zac Dalpe, A. J. Jenks, Riley Nash, Andreas Nodl, Jerome Samson and Brett Sutter all unavailable due to injury or recall to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Marshall, a native of Buffalo, MN, spent part of the 2009-10 season with the ECHL version of the Checkers, scoring 34 points (23g, 11a) in 55 regular-season games and an additional nine (4g, 5a) in 11 playoff games. He becomes the second player on the current roster to have played for both the ECHL and AHL versions of the Checkers. David Rutherford, who has two points in his last two games, is the other, though the two have not crossed paths until now.
Other players who have played for both Checkers franchises (six total) are Julien Brouillette, Ethan Graham, Cedric McNicoll and Chris Murray.
