A pair of charity hockey games will take place at Time Warner Cable Arena this weekend, highlighted by the ninth annual “Salute to Heroes” match on Sunday.
Members of CMPD and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office will face off against the Charlotte Fire Department and Mecklenburg EMS Agency beginning at approximately 4:30 p.m. following the 1:30 p.m. matchup between the Checkers and Oklahoma City Barons. CFD/MEDIC leads the overall series 5-3, and more than 3,000 fans attended last year’s Heroes game.
Sponsorships, donations and a portion of ticket sales will benefit the families of injured and fallen public service workers from CFD, MEDIC, CMPD and MCSO. More than $175,000 in gifts and cash has been raised since the event’s inception in 2006.
Prior to the Checkers game Saturday, Johnson and Wales University students, Wells Fargo employees and airline employees will participate in a two-game series, which will benefit Alexander Youth Network. The games will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Time Warner Cable Arena and will be followed by a skating event for attendees at 4 p.m.
