Checkers players, staff members and fans helped raise more than $91,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity that helps fund research to find cures for childhood cancer.
Checkers Director of Community Relations/in-game hostess Elle Bunn and forward Matt Marquardt led the three-month initiative by shaving their heads in honor of Carter Dang, a 4-year-old boy who recently lost his battle with cancer, and Claire Ratliff, who did the same in 2012.
Overall, 74 willing participants raised money by shaving their heads in the inaugural event, the first ever St. Baldrick’s fundraiser in Charlotte. The Checkers would like to thank Connolly’s on Fifth, the site of the player and staff head shave on Friday, March 14, and barbers from Sport Clips, who donated their time and equipment in helping shave heads.
