The Hurricanes placed six players on waivers on Sunday, likely with the intention of assigning them to Charlotte as training camp reaches its later stages.

According to multiple sources and confirmed by the Raleigh News and Observer, Carolina waived forwards Nicolas Blanchard, Zach Boychuk, Aaron Palushaj and Jared Staal, defenseman Michal Jordan and goalie Justin Peters following the team’s fourth exhibition game on Saturday. Due to those players’ age and experience, they require waivers in order to play in the AHL this season.

Of players on that list, only Jordan and Staal, each entering their fourth professional seasons, are on waivers for the first time in their careers. Blanchard and Peters have cleared on multiple attempts, while successful claims were put in on Boychuk (three times) and Palushaj as recently as last season.

If no other teams submit claims for those players by noon on Monday, they would then be free to join the Checkers for AHL training camp in Charlotte. It’s possible that other players who do not require waivers – of those currently on Carolina’s roster not waived Sunday, that list is limited to center Jeremy Welsh and defenseman Ryan Murphy - could also be assigned at that time.

Players on two-way contracts that do require waivers for an AHL assignment that Carolina did not waive Sunday include forwards Zac Dalpe, Nathan Gerbe, Riley Nash, Brett Sutter and Chris Terry, and defensemen Matt Corrente and Brett Bellemore.
