The Carolina Hurricanes finalized their season-opening roster by assigning defenseman Ryan Murphy to Charlotte on Monday.

Murphy, 20, returns to the place where he finished last season, having played in each of the Checkers’ last seven games following the conclusion of his junior career with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers. During that time, he registered four assists, including two in five playoff games.

The Hurricanes’ first-round pick (12th overall) in 2011, Murphy gives the Checkers eight defensemen and 25 total players ahead of Friday’s season-opener at Oklahoma City. Along with 2013 first-round pick Elias Lindholm, he was one of two remaining players at Carolina’s training camp who did not require waivers in order to join an AHL team.

Murphy becomes the third player to join Charlotte in the last two days, joining forward Chris Terry, who cleared waivers earlier Monday, and Kellan Tochkin, who was acquired from Vancouver in exchange for Zac Dalpe and Jeremy Welsh.
