Local product Bryan Moore is among 28 players heading to the Carolina Hurricanes’ development camp next week.
Moore, a 20-year-old who will attend as an undrafted invite, also went to the New York Rangers’ development camp that began in late June. A former Jr. Checker and stick boy at Charlotte Checkers games, Moore posted 61 points (25g, 36a) in 58 games with Sarnia and Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League last season.
Moore, who became the first Charlotte native to attend organized activities with an NHL team when he went to Rangers camp, is part of an emerging group of North Carolina hockey players that will be well-represented in Raleigh next week. Josh Wesley, a defenseman who became the first North Carolinian drafted to the NHL (the fourth round of this year’s draft) and fellow Raleigh native Logan Halladay, an undrafted goaltender, will also be in attendance.
Joining those players in Raleigh will be recently-drafted players and a large group of existing Hurricanes prospects, many of whom are likely to begin their professional careers in Charlotte next season. That group is highlighted by high-scoring junior forward Brock McGinn and University of Michigan product Phil Di Giuseppe, both second-round picks in 2012, defenseman Trevor Carrick (fourth round in 2012) and goaltender Daniel Altshuller (third round in 2012). Free-agent signings Patrick Brown and Carter Sandlak will also be at the camp, as will January 2014 trade acquisition Dennis Robertson.
Unlike last season’s camp that featured a bevy of players with AHL experience, forward Brendan Woods is the only full-time player from last season’s Checkers team expected to attend camp. Di Giuseppe, McGinn and Robertson all played for Charlotte on tryout contracts following the conclusion of their junior and college seasons.
The first on-ice session of the camp will take place Monday, July 21, with the week’s activities concluding with a game and skills competition on Saturday, July 26 (full roster and schedule available here). Most practices are open to the public at PNC Arena.
