Day 15 - Clothing Drive at Fan FestTo cap off “15 Days of Giving,” the Checkers held a clothing drive at the fan fest in Uptown Charlotte prior to the home opener. Hundreds of items of clothing were collected and will be donated to Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont.
Day 14 - Loaves and FishesOn Day 14, a group of staff members traveled to Loaves and Fishes to help sort and categorize donated food. Loaves and Fishes is a Charlotte-based food pantry that collects and supplies food and groceries to people in crisis. To find out more, visit www.loavesandfishes.org.
Day 13 - Men's Shelter of CharlotteOn Day 13, a group of volunteers headed to Men’s Shelter of Charlotte to help prepare and serve lunch. Day 12 - Bowling with Special Olympics North CarolinaThe Chubby’s Buddies program, which pairs a Special Olympics North Carolina athlete with a Checkers player for events throughout the season, kicked off with a bowling outing at Ten Park Lanes. Checkers players Sean Dolan, Matt Marquardt, Mike Murphy, Justin Shugg, Brody Sutter and Brendan Woods and their buddies enjoyed a fun afternoon of bowling, followed by a pizza party.
Day 11 - Second Harvest Food BankCheckers forwards Victor Rask and Adam Brace joined a group of staff members at Second Harvest Foodbank of Metrolina. The group dropped off more than 300 pounds of food collected at the Checkers’ Select-A-Seat event and spent the rest of the afternoon sorting and organizing housewares and food.
Day 10 - Rescue RanchOn Day 10, a group of Checkers employees traveled to Statesville to Rescue Ranch, a non-profit animal welfare organization formed by NASCAR driver Ryan Newman and his wife Krissie. The group helped feed and bathe animals and cleaned cages and stalls before helping organize the new facility for its grand opening on Oct. 26. Day 9 - Woof'n & Hoof'n Fall FestivalChubby and the CheckMates spent the day at the Woof'n & Hoof'n Fall Festival, where they helped vendors and organizers with setup, demonstrations, the Dog Jog race and pet contests. Proceeds from this year's festival benefited S.A.F.E. Animal Haven and the United States Equine Rescue League.
Day 8 - Food Drive at Select-A-SeatOn Day 8, the Checkers held a food drive at their annual Select-A-Seat/Meet the Checkers event, collecting hundreds of non-perishable food items for Second Harvest Food Bank. The items will be delivered Tuesday, when Checkers forwards Victor Rask and Adam Brace and a group of staff members will spend the afternoon sorting donated food.
Day 7 - Habitat for HumanityCheckers forwards Sean Dolan, Matt Marquardt and Jared Staal, along with a group of staff members, spent the day Friday with Habitat for Humanity, helping frame and roof three houses. Habitat for Humanity Charlotte has built more than 1,200 houses in the area since 1983. For more information, visit www.habitatcharlotte.org.
Day 6 - Novant Health Blume PediatricOn Day 6, Checkers staff members visited Novant Health Blume Pediatric Hematology and Oncology to play and color with the kids. Day 5 - Carolina Raptor CenterThe Checkers spent Day 5 volunteering at Carolina Raptor Center as part of an ongoing relationship with the facility. The volunteers helped clean and fix the walking trails.
Carolina Raptor Center is dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey through education, research and the rehabilitation of injured and orphan raptors. Their three-quarter mile Raptor Trail in Latta Plantation Nature Preserve houses species of native and exotic raptors including hawks, owls, eagles, kites, falcons and vultures. Day 4 - Humane Society of CharlotteThe Humane Society of Charlotte was the focus of Day 4, as a group of CheckMates and Checkers staff members help cleaned the facilities, distribute pet toys and sort food for the animals.
Day 3 - Sow Much GoodOn Day 3, a group of Checkers staff members, along with Sow Much Good, spent the afternoon at the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, cleaning up the community garden, harvesting crops and preparing the area for the fall crop. Sow Much Good works to achieve food justice through programming and community based initiatives designed to provide equal access to organic food sources. Learn more at www.sowmuchgood.org.
Day 2 - Brunch at Queen City Q for No Kid HungryFor Day 2, the Charlotte CheckMates hosted a charity brunch at Queen City Q in Uptown Charlotte. A portion of proceeds from every entrée ordered was given to No Kid Hungry North Carolina on behalf of Queen City Q and the Charlotte Checkers Charitable Foundation.
No Kid Hungry North Carolina is a public-private partnership working to end childhood hunger by connecting kids to federal food and nutrition programs, including school breakfast and summer meals.
